TARRAGONA, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Spain’s greatest human towers competitors passed off on Sunday, with some 11,000 spectators packing the bullring within the northeastern metropolis of Tarragona to look at the daring Catalan custom.
Human towers, or ‘castells’, have been added to UNESCO’s record of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010 as an “integral a part of (Catalan) cultural identification”.
The custom dates again to the 18th century, when folks first began constructing human towers within the Catalan city of Valls.

In an occasion held in Tarragona each two years, groups of ‘castellers’ compete to assemble the best and most intricate tower by standing on one another’s shoulders.
