BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Feb 13 (Reuters) – Hollywood’s movie academy didn’t adequately reply to Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock on the Academy Awards final March, the group’s president mentioned on Monday at a gathering of this 12 months’s Oscar nominees.
The Academy of Movement Image Arts and Sciences was criticized for permitting Smith to stay in his seat, and settle for the very best actor trophy, after he assaulted Rock on stage.
“What occurred on stage was completely unacceptable,” academy president Janet Yang mentioned on the annual Oscar nominees’ luncheon in Beverly Hills. “And the response from the group was insufficient.
“We discovered from this that the academy have to be totally clear and accountable in our actions, and significantly in occasions of disaster,” she added.
Smith resigned from the academy after the incident, and the academy banned him from attending the Oscars for 10 years. He stays eligible to be nominated for and win Academy Awards.
At Tuesday’s lunch, nominees together with Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett schmoozed and posed for a gaggle picture.
