WINDHOEK, Nov 23 (Reuters) – A big crane lifted a colonial-era statue of German official Curt von Francois in Namibian capital Windhoek on Wednesday, as a crowd that gathered close by clapped and hooted in delight.
The two.4 metre (7-foot, 9-inch) bronze statue of von Francois was unveiled in 1965 in the course of the 75-year anniversary celebrations of Windhoek.
The controversial statue was seen as an emblem of colonial oppression within the southern African nation, and is the most recent to be taken down as activists world wide mount campaigns for his or her removals.
Germany has a troubled previous with Namibia. The nation apologised in 2021 for its position within the bloodbath of Herero and Nama tribespeople in Namibia greater than a century in the past and formally described it as a genocide for the primary time.
